Asilah

Asilah is the perfect outing when you want a change of scenery without a long drive. Just 35 minutes from the port of Tangier, it can be discovered in half a day, which even allows combining it with Cape Spartel or Tangier. The medina is small, flat and entirely pedestrian: you stroll through it effortlessly, camera in hand. It is one of the cleanest and most peaceful towns in northern Morocco, ideal for anyone who wants a breath of sea air and beautiful images without any hassle, whether arriving by cruise, ferry or plane.

The Portuguese ramparts: built in the 15th century, they encircle the medina and offer a walk facing the ocean. The medina: white and blue alleys, painted doors, bougainvillea; the charming heart of the town. The wall murals: Asilah is famous for its art festival; artists from around the world paint the medina walls, regularly renewed. Bab el-Kasaba and the El Hamra tower: the monumental gates and the viewpoint over the Atlantic. The seafront and fishing port: for fresh fish and the sunset. Paradise Beach, a few kilometers away, if you stay longer.

Asilah has built an international reputation thanks to its Cultural Festival, launched in 1978, which every summer turns the medina into an open-air gallery. Muralists from around the world repaint the white walls, so the murals change from one year to the next. The result: a town where folk art and Mediterranean architecture answer each other in every alley. This is what sets Asilah apart from the other northern medinas and makes it an unrivaled playground for photographers.

Asilah lives to the rhythm of the Atlantic, and you taste it. Fresh fish and seafood: grilled sardines, sea bream, calamari, served simply facing the port. Northern cuisine: Andalusian and Mediterranean influences. Mint tea on a terrace by the ramparts, at sunset. The small seafront restaurants offer excellent value, far gentler than in the tourist areas of the south. It is the perfect spot for a fish lunch before heading back to the port.

From the port of Tangier Ville to Asilah, allow about 45 km and 35 minutes via the motorway running south along the Atlantic. It is the shortest journey of all the excursions from Tangier. A private vehicle remains the most flexible option: pickup at your hotel, the port or Tangier airport, drop-off at the entrance to the pedestrian medina, and a return at the time of your choice. A train also links Tangier to Asilah, but with less timing flexibility than a private transfer.

Half a day is enough: the medina takes 2 to 3 hours; combine it with Cape Spartel or a fish lunch to fill the day. Comfortable shoes, though the ground is flat and easy. Cash: small shops and restaurants do not always take cards. Lively summer: during the festival (July-August) the town is very lively but busier. Sunset: if your schedule allows, the ramparts at dusk offer one of the finest views on the north coast.
