Practical tips

When to go: all year round, ideal in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). In summer, bring sunscreen, a hat and water; in winter, a jacket for the cool Rif mornings.

Clothing: comfortable walking shoes (the medinas are cobbled and hilly). Clothing covering shoulders and knees is appreciated out of respect, especially in Tetouan, which is less touristy.

Photos: Chefchaouen offers its best light in late morning. Tetouan's more authentic medina is wonderful for street photography; ask permission before photographing locals.

Tetouan: its UNESCO-listed medina is a living labyrinth still inhabited by craftsmen. A free walk is recommended to soak up the Andalusian atmosphere, away from the tourist crowds.

For cruise passengers: the itinerary and timing adapt to your stopover. Let us know the latest return time to the port when booking.
